Ghost Hunting – The Truth About Good Research
By Gary L. Nichols
If you have watched any of the current “Ghost Hunting” programs on television, I am sure you have heard the TV ghost hunters refer to what “research shows”. By way of example, the most frequent one I hear is “research shows that when spirits manifest, they give off electromagnetic frequencies that we can pick up with our EMF detectors”. Indeed, they call what they are doing in their shows as “paranormal research”. What is research? How should searches be carried out to follow true research protocol? I will show you, here, what we do and what is and isn’t true about research.
Where ever possible, ghost or what we call “anomalous phenomena” investigations should maintain some scientific parameters considered appropriate for research. Any deviation from that model should be documented as a controversy in the findings. All of what we see on television and what we do is a part of research that is, actually, only in the “information gathering” phase and is primarily aimed at the documentation of experience and findings within the parameters of the circumstances established and within the limits of the current technology available. To draw conclusions based on limited or contaminated information is erroneous and dangerous. On the other hand, to say that the reports are flawed, therefore, useless, is far too dismissive in scope.
In order for the information to have any true value it must include in the reports themselves the mechanism whereby flaws and weaknesses are identified. In this way researchers with more resources can pick up where our resources have been exhausted. Therefore, our mission is to explore certain questions, requests and experiences that appear to have anomalous circumstances involved and to report findings based upon a model that includes as much baseline information and process detail as possible within the limits of our current technology and resources.
It needs to be understood that while what is defined as quantitative research and is bound by numbers, there, too, are qualitative designs that have as a base, anecdotal information such as case studies and witness reports. All of this information is valuable. However, as I have pointed out, the limits of the information and the discrepancies in procedure must be identified. All discrepancies and limits must be included in the discussion and conclusion along with a clear description of the method. Again, much of what we do will be the compilation of information. Conclusions may be possible in some circumstances but it is likely that the compilation may most often be the end product and represent the limits to which we can extend. Hopefully, in total, the information may be of some use for the field in general. Next Article: Identify your own weaknesses and strengths.

Triangular UFO’s
By Gabe K Smith
Triangular UFO’s have been seen since the 1940’s but have increased rapidly since 1990’s. Many skeptics of UFO’s go to possible government files of them working on flying disk technology. There are also records of triangular UFO’s but, in August 2004 the organization (NIDS) found that sightings did not conform to previous deployment of black project aircraft and that the objects’ origins and agendas were unknown. So it’s hard to explain the triangular UFO’s. Are the triangular UFO’s really from other planets?
One of the most famous UFO sightings was the Phoenix Lights incident. There was multiple UFO sightings some as low as 1,000 feet and moved far too slowly and silently for a airplane or helicopter. Also there was a V shape to the objects. Another thing was the speed. Just like in other UFO’s, they accelerated too fast and slowly to be man made. The big lights pointing down on the city could be seen from as far away as Las Vegas some reported, but seen much better in the city. An official report made by the Air Force about the incident concluded that the military had been testing flares launched from conventional aircraft during that time. The Air Force even tried to recreate the event, going in their V shape formation but the noise was far to loud and didn’t recreate the event. Also the object was reported to be a mile long, longer than our aircrafts.
Since it can’t be explained, they need to be studied more.

Telescopes in Hand, Astronomers Zero in on Light Pollution
By Cheryl Marland
Information from aspiring and veteran astronomers was published in The Independent about the state of light pollution in Britain. A number of viewpoints were discussed, from aspiring astronomers to those that have been in the field for decades. The dialog surrounds Galloway Forest Park, an astronomical destination for stargazers.
Evidence that word was spreading in the astronomy community about the night sky view at Galloway Forest Park became apparent late at night. Keith Muir, who works for Forestry Commission Scotland, started noticing the park monitoring equipment showing droves of people driving to the forest late at night. Initially suspecting suspicious behavior, Keith and police were fascinated to find a group of individuals on stargazer expeditions. Groups of aspiring astronomers are relishing a view found in fewer and fewer areas as a result of light pollution. Galloway Forest Park is one of a small number of destinations in Britain where a clear view of the night sky remains. This is compelling enough to put light pollution in a bad light.
It is important that citizens do everything possible to eliminate the threat of light pollution by ensuring that unwelcome light doesn’t shine upwards into the night sky. City planners can also work towards enacting dark sky ordinances that will preserve the night skies in rural and urban areas. City planners and citizens would benefit from the advice of veteran astronomers like Dave Crawford, PhD. In the article he describes how in 1958, stargazing wasn’t as difficult as it is today.
Modern civilization has evolved around the night sky. Ancient peoples celebrated the wonders of the constellations. In present times, it’s unfortunate that people living in urban areas can’t even identify the constellations. Areas such as Galloway Forest Park still have amazingly clear views of the night sky because a growing segment of the world is working to reclaim the night skies from light pollution. According to The Independent, Galloway Forest Park was awarded special “dark sky park” status by the Dark-Sky Association (IDA). It is clear that the movement to eliminate light pollution is growing, because those that look to the stars for study and inspiration should have constellations readily available to observe, not just memories in a document to look at.
As homeowners we can do our part by turning off outside lights when not needed and replacing light fixtures with great looking, energy saving dark sky lighting.

Astronomy – An Introduction

Everything About Haunting – 3 Basic Varieties of Haunting

First off, Happy New Year to all…
Hey, as the creator of the CUPIC series, I rarely have the opportunity to report anything unusual as it happens or recently happens. My last sighting of the unknown was well back in 2006, and that was a brief sighting of some silver cylinder high up in the sky as described in the CUPICtv video, “CLOSE ENCOUNTERS.” Well tonight I think that I just had two.
Right now, I am in Las Vegas, actually Henderson, Nevada, for my job. Waiting for the New Year to ring in, I just happened to be looking out the window. I have a great view of Vegas from the window and was not crazy enough to join the crowds and let’s face it, as of recent, I am a total woos when it comes to cold weather and 36 degrees may not seem cold to some of you back east, here when you are use to 80s and above, you tend to take notice.
At midnight the fireworks started, I could see the Stratosphere clearly in the distance. I shot video and took a few stills with my tiny digital camera. After fifteen minutes, the display was done, or so I thought. I went over to my laptop and hooked up the camera to see what I captured, after watching a bit, I stopped the camera. I then noticed a few more bursts of fireworks through the curtain. I went over to the window to see, and there were a few random bursts from different sides of the city. I noticed a bright point of light, high up in the north-northwest sky. At first I thought that it was a star or planet, then a second light appeared under it, that light quickly dimmed and darted left. My first thought was, “Well in the hell is my camera, “I moved swiftly to the table and unplugged it. By the time I got back to the window the second light was gone. But the first light was still there. By the time I hit the power button, that light dimmed and darted to the right, and blinked into nothingness as it moved away.
To me this incident counters the argument about the fact that video/ still capture technology have come a long way; i.e. digital camera, phones, etc. “Why aren’t there more sightings captured on digital?” My answer is simple; it is because of situations that I ran into tonight. How simple would it have been for me to bring the camera to the window with me? That’s one of many plausible factors. I will detail this sighting and subject in a future article. For now, have a happy and safe New Year….
